Katy Perry is getting roasted – not by the critics but by a former American Idol contestant. Steven James who was on the show five years ago when Katy was a judge posted a TikTok mocking her new song “OK” from her deluxe album.
“This can’t be the same person who eliminated me on American Idol five years ago” he captioned the video which shows him smiling and shaking his head while listening to the song.
The comments were flooded with the same sentiment, “Katy this is not OK” “What in the PBS Kids is happening here” Many fans were nostalgic for her old hits “This is not the same Katy Perry that made The One That Got Away”
A Tough Year for Perry
Perry left American Idol earlier this year and released her 6th album 143 in September. Unfortunately the album got lukewarm reviews and the deluxe edition which dropped on December 20 didn’t do much better. One of the bonus tracks is “OK” which has been the target of online hate.
The Hollywood Reporter included Perry in their 2024’s biggest losers in entertainment and called her comeback attempt a failure. “Like a Kevin Costner of music, Perry quit her American Idol day job… to launch a comeback album that some thought must have been made by AI” the outlet wrote.
The lead single “Woman’s World” was supposed to be an empowerment anthem but was panned for being too cliché especially with Dr. Luke as the producer. Despite the album’s struggles fans and critics are hoping for a better 2025 with her “dance party tour”.
While the hate for “OK” and 143 has been intense Perry is still a beloved artist with a long list of hits. As she preps for 2025 tour fans hope she can get back to being the pop queen with new energy and focus.
For now, though, Perry seems to be weathering a storm of critique—a reminder that even pop royalty isn’t immune to public scrutiny.
